AI YouTube Thumbnail Maker

Describe the video. Get a click-worthy 1280 × 720 thumbnail in seconds.

A thumbnail is the only advertisement your video gets. Design Maker AI writes the layout for you — the face crop, the four-word hook, the outline that keeps the text readable at 210 pixels wide in a crowded feed — from one sentence describing the video.

Why use this instead of a template

Built for a small preview

Heavy weights, thick outlines and three-to-five-word hooks — the choices that survive being shrunk to a sidebar tile instead of dissolving into grey.

A/B two versions in a minute

Generate one, ask for a warmer palette or a different hook in chat, and export both. Testing thumbnails stops being a half-day job.

Bring your own face

Attach a frame grab or a headshot as a reference and the AI composes around it — expression on one side, headline on the other.

Channel-consistent look

Name your palette and font feel once, and every following thumbnail can be asked to match it, so a channel page reads as one series.

How the youtube thumbnail maker works

Four steps, and only the first one costs credits.

  1. 1

    Describe the video

One sentence: the subject, the emotion, and the words you want on screen. "Shocked face, neon lighting, I BEAT IT in yellow" is plenty.

  2. 2

    Generate at 16:9

The thumbnail comes back already framed at 1280 × 720, with the text placed clear of the duration badge in the bottom-right.

  3. 3

    Refine by chat

Ask for a bigger headline, a different arrow, a colder background. Refinements are free and unlimited — only the first generation spends credits.

  4. 4

    Export and upload

Download PNG or JPG under YouTube’s 2 MB limit and upload straight to the video.

What makes a YouTube thumbnail get clicked

Three things decide whether a thumbnail earns the click: a focal point a viewer can read in a quarter of a second, a headline short enough to finish reading before scrolling past, and enough contrast against the surrounding feed to stop the eye at all. Everything else — gradients, glows, borders — is decoration.

Design Maker AI treats those three as constraints rather than suggestions. Prompts get composed into a layout with one subject, a headline of about five words at a weight heavy enough to hold its own outline, and a background pushed away in value from the text. That is why a generated thumbnail still reads when YouTube renders it at 210 pixels wide on a phone.

Thumbnail sizes and technical limits

YouTube asks for 1280 × 720 pixels at a 16:9 ratio, with a 1280-pixel minimum width and a 2 MB file-size ceiling for JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP. Every design this tool produces starts at that size, so there is no upscaling or letterboxing step afterwards.

Keep meaningful content out of the bottom-right corner: the duration badge sits there, and the progress bar covers the bottom edge on watched videos. The generator places headlines in the left or upper region for this reason, and you can ask it to move them if your layout needs the other side.

Using a reference frame instead of a prompt

If you already have a frame from the video, attach it. The AI reads the composition and colour of the reference and builds the thumbnail around it — cropping to the face, adding the outline and glow that separate a subject from its background, and reserving space for the headline instead of dropping type on top of the busiest part of the image.

This is usually the faster route for talking-head content, where the expression matters more than the illustration. For tutorials and list videos, a written prompt tends to win because the layout carries the message.

Every thumbnail is generated at 1280 × 720 pixels, the 16:9 size YouTube recommends, and exports well under the 2 MB upload limit.

Yes. Attach a headshot or a frame grab as a reference image and the AI composes the thumbnail around it, including the cutout-style outline that separates a subject from the background.

Write the exact words in the prompt, in quotes, and they are rendered into the design. You can also change the wording afterwards by asking in chat.

Yes. Designs you generate are yours to use on your channel, including monetised videos and sponsored content.

Yes — ask for a 9:16 version of the same design, or start from the Social post format, and the layout is recomposed for a vertical frame rather than cropped.
