In the US and Canada, business cards are 3.5 × 2 inches (89 × 51 mm). In Europe, the UK and most of Asia the standard is 85 × 55 mm, which is very slightly taller and narrower. Both are close enough that a design generated for one adapts easily.
The number that matters more than either is the safe margin. Printers cut with a tolerance of a millimetre or two, so keep all text 3 mm inside the trim and extend any background colour past it as bleed.
How much to put on a card
The temptation is to fill the space: name, role, two phone numbers, an email, a website, four social handles, a QR code and a tagline. The result is a card nobody reads and a design that looks anxious.
A better rule is one identity element on the front and no more than five lines on the back. If something is already on your website, it does not need to be on the card.
Choosing a finish worth paying for
Finish is where a small print budget buys the most perceived quality. A thicker uncoated stock feels immediately better than a glossy thin one. Blind embossing and a single foil accent both read as expensive; using both usually reads as trying too hard.
