Poster sizes and print ratios

The A series (A3, A2, A1) shares a ratio close to 1:1.414, while the common US sizes 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 inches are a clean 3:4 and 2:3. Generating at 2:3 or 3:4 keeps a design compatible with the widest set of printers and frames.

Whatever the size, keep type at least 10 mm inside the trim edge. Print shops cut with a tolerance, and a title that touches the boundary in the file often loses a few millimetres on the wall.

The two-distance rule

Good poster design serves two viewers. The one walking past needs a single image and a title, resolved in under a second. The one who stopped wants the date, the venue, the line-up and the small print.

Those are different type sizes with a big gap between them. Posters that fail usually set everything at a middle size, which serves neither viewer.

Borrowing a visual language
